Apple shuts down iOS 8 jailbreak: iOS 8.1.2 is no longer signed

The endless game of throw and catch between developers and Apple continues as the company has now stopped signing the iOS 8.1.2 firmware, effectively closing the option to jailbreak the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and all other iOS devices running iOS 8.x.

For those of you who are not following jailbreaking affairs, we should clarify that ‘signing’ a version of iOS is basically a method Apple uses to say that a particular version is up to date. Imagine this being a sort of an expiration date - once Apple stops signing a version, as it has with iOS 8.1.2, that puts an ‘expired’ tag on it.

For jailbreakers this is important because iOS 8.1.2 uses an exploit that has now been patched in iOS 8.1.3, and you had to downgrade to iOS 8.1.2 to enjoy the benefits of jailbreaking to get full system access. Now, that’s effectively impossible, and we’ll have to wait for the next jailbreak solution (that could come after Apple releases iOS 8.2 or iOS 8.3, which are already in the works as evidence shows).

The iOS 8.1.2 jailbreak came courtesy of Chinese team TaiG, and Apple even paid tribute to the group for finding a vulnerability in its software. Apple mentioned TaiG in its developer notes for iOS 8.1.3 where the vulnerability is fixed.

Finally, if you’re wondering whether this latest development affects your jailbroken iOS 8.1.2 device, the answer is no. However, you simply would not be able to install iOS 8.1.2 if you try to do the jailbreak now. You can check whether a version of iOS is Apple-signed over at IPSW.me.
